Spring Student Safety

The nation’s capital is absolutely beautiful in Spring. It invites anyone out to enjoy a walk by the River, a game of tennis, shopping along M Street. The cherry blossoms bloom just as that bit of warmth comes to the air. But Spring may also bring a reduced awareness of one’s surroundings, and one’s safety. The activities of Spring need not necessarily compromise students’ safety. The following are a few tips that, you can mention to our students to help them enrich their Spring activities and safety.

  • Be aware of your surroundings. Tune all five senses into who and what is around you. Take out the earphones! Hang up the phone!
  • Walk and run in groups. Don’t carry a lot of cash or a lot of credit cards.
  • Let a friend know your destination and estimated arrival time.
  • Avoid excessive drinking. A drunk individual may be more vulnerable.
  • Light it and lock it. Keep doors and windows locked at all times, even when you are in the house. Keep your front light turned on. If your locks or lights are not functioning, contact your landlord.
In December, the University inaugurated a new safety shuttle for students that is an excellent resource to get around the West Georgetown and Burleith neighborhoods. The service was implemented on the recommendation of the Student Safety Advisory Board, composed of students and staff who advise the Vice President for University Safety, David Morrell. The shuttle runs two loops. One loop accesses Burleith, and one serves West Georgetown. Each loop takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Riders may board or exit the van at several points along the loops. The shuttle operates on Thursdays, 10:00 P.M. until 2:00 A.M., and Fridays and Saturdays, 10:00 P.M until 3:00 A.M. Students can easily transfer between the two shuttles at Healy Gates.

The response to the shuttle has been gratifying, with the number of riders increasing weekly.

The Missing Story of Ourselves: Poverty and the Promise of Higher Education

The Division of Student Affairs hosts a nationally touring exhibit of 50 framed, museum quality, color photographs coupled with narratives created by students who are welfare-eligible, single parents. The exhibit tells a story of their changing lives through the pathway of higher education. The installation was created through the ACCESS Project at Hamilton College (Clinton, NY) and it presents a unique view of poverty from insiders’ perspectives and reframes the cultural (de)valuations of poor single parents vis-à-vis family, work and higher education in the United States today.

Sponsored by several Georgetown University departments (such as the Women’s and Gender Studies Program, the Office of Student Affairs, the American Studies Program, the Department of English, the Program on Justice and Peace, the Center for Social Justice and the Office of the President), the exhibit is on display in the Student Affairs office from April 7 to April 21, 2006. For more information on the ACCESS project please visit http://www.hamilton.edu/college/access .
