Saving Lives - Georgetown Emergency Response
Medical Service
TOOOONE.
The sounds of an emergency dispatch come
over the radio and the EMTs of Georgetown
Emergency Response Medical Service leap
into action. Within a few minutes, they
are in the ambulance, lights and sirens
blaring, rushing to provide emergency
medical treatment to a patient in need.
These Georgetown students (called ‘GERMS’
for short) are on call 24/7, ready to
save lives. - By Becca Danis

K2C
– Shadow Day
“I
had such a wonderful time with the K2C
kids!!....I loved that they were not shy
and were curious!” Such were the
responses from Maya Patel’s Introduction
to Biology Course as 150 middle school
students descended upon the campus to
hear lectures, meet students, and participate
in the amazing experience of being a Georgetown
University student for the day of Thursday,
April 6th, 2006. - By Derrick H. Lewis

Georgetown
University’s Black Theatre Ensemble
This has been a tremendous year for the
arts at Georgetown University. The opening
of the Davis Performing Arts Center, the
collaboration of student theater companies
with the theater department, and the colorful
rendering of classic and modern texts
have elevated the performing arts to the
center of campus activity and enjoyment.
Standing at the cusp of the new surge
of campus support and celebration of the
arts is Georgetown’s very own student
run Black Theater Ensemble. - By Joshua

The
Georgetown MBA Ultimate4 Basketball Tournament
– February 2006
The
sound of bouncing basketballs reverberated
through the otherwise quiet and cavernous
Yates Field House at 7am on a Saturday
morning as 45 bleary-eyed graduate students
with a few tired friends and family members
prepared for the kick-off of the latest
edition of the largest and longest running
MBA basketball tournament in the nation.

Spring
Student Safety
|
The
nation’s capital
is absolutely beautiful
in Spring. It invites
anyone out to enjoy
a walk by the River,
a game of tennis, shopping
along M Street. The
cherry blossoms bloom
just as that bit of
warmth comes to the
air. But Spring may
also bring a reduced
awareness of one’s
surroundings, and one’s
safety. The activities
of Spring need not necessarily
compromise students’
safety. The following
are a few tips that,
you can mention to our
students to help them
enrich their Spring
activities and safety.
-
Be aware of your surroundings.
Tune all five senses
into who and what
is around you. Take
out the earphones!
Hang up the phone!
-
Walk and run in groups.
Don’t carry
a lot of cash or a
lot of credit cards.
-
Let a friend know
your destination and
estimated arrival
time.
-
Avoid excessive drinking.
A drunk individual
may be more vulnerable.
-
Light it and lock
it. Keep doors and
windows locked at
all times, even when
you are in the house.
Keep your front light
turned on. If your
locks or lights are
not functioning, contact
your landlord.

In
December, the University
inaugurated a new
safety shuttle for
students that is
an excellent resource
to get around the
West Georgetown
and Burleith neighborhoods.
The service was
implemented on the
recommendation of
the Student Safety
Advisory Board,
composed of students
and staff who advise
the Vice President
for University Safety,
David Morrell. The
shuttle runs two
loops. One loop
accesses Burleith,
and one serves West
Georgetown. Each
loop takes approximately
15 minutes to complete.
Riders may board
or exit the van
at several points
along the loops.
The shuttle operates
on Thursdays, 10:00
P.M. until 2:00
A.M., and Fridays
and Saturdays, 10:00
P.M until 3:00 A.M.
Students can easily
transfer between
the two shuttles
at Healy Gates.
|
The
response to the shuttle
has been gratifying,
with the number of riders
increasing weekly.

The
Missing Story of Ourselves:
Poverty and the Promise
of Higher Education
|
The
Division of Student
Affairs hosts
a nationally touring
exhibit of 50
framed, museum
quality, color
photographs coupled
with narratives
created by students
who are welfare-eligible,
single parents.
The exhibit tells
a story of their
changing lives
through the pathway
of higher education.
The installation
was created through
the ACCESS Project
at Hamilton College
(Clinton, NY)
and it presents
a unique view
of poverty from
insiders’
perspectives and
reframes the cultural
(de)valuations
of poor single
parents vis-à-vis
family, work and
higher education
in the United
States today.
