Medical Leave of Absence

During the course of your time at Georgetown it may be necessary for you to take time away from campus due to medical or mental health concerns. The Office of the Dean of Students (DOS), and Student Outreach and Support (SOS) will be key advocates and guides throughout the Medical Leave of Absence (MLOA) process to ensure as smooth a transition as possible both away from campus, and when you are ready to return.

You can use the links on the left side of the page to navigate the MLOA process, but if you have any questions or concerns please reach out to the Dean of Students.

If you opted for a MLOA prior to January 2025 the procedures to return may have changed. Please reach out to the Office of the Dean of Students if you have any questions and we will be happy to help you navigate the changes.

Benefits of Taking a MLOA

  1. A MLOA allows a student to obtain the care and support that they need to return to their studies when they are ready.
  1. While on MLOA, a staff member from Student Outreach and Support (“SOS”) may check in with students periodically to discuss their progress and prepare for a safe and healthy return.
  1. A MLOA may allow a student to initiate a leave of absence and withdraw from classes later in the semester than is normally permitted for personal leaves of absence.
  2. For undergraduate students with tuition reimbursement insurance, a MLOA generally qualifies a student for benefits under tuition insurance plans they may carry.  Please be sure to check the insurance policy to confirm coverage.
